Saudi women driving protests and my flirtation with wearing a #hijab

The AP reports: "A protest supporter, Benjamin Joffe-Walt, said some Saudi men claimed they drove around dressed in the traditional black coverings for women in an attempt to confuse security forces."

Now, I don't know if this is true. There's reason to doubt it -- I wonder what Saudi repression forces would do to men who would do such a thing.

But it's a funny idea and it reminds me of a similar thought had several years ago. Tina Richards, a great activist and former marine mom who probably had the most successful political video encounter ever with then-Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations David Obey (D-Wis.), for a time had a job at Press TV, an Iranian controlled channel. Now, she was basically required to wear a hijab while on-air and she would typically wear a pink one as a sort of CodePinky peace statement. She would occasionally invite me on as a guest and after a while I got the idea to wear a hijab myself on-air as a statement of solidarity with her having to wear one. I ended up not doing it, partly because I wasn't sure anyone would understand what I was saying, partly because programs were sometimes taped, but mostly because I was worried it would get her in trouble.
